Surrendering Your Pet

Important information, considerations, and next steps.

Surrendering Your Pet to CNHS

Most of the time, CNHS operates at capacity due to our Animal Control contracts that require us to accept all animals found in violation of local ordinances. This means that we do not typically have space to accept owner surrendered animals. We encourage owners to look for professional assistance with behavior or medical issues to prevent rehoming an animal. If that is not an option, owners should attempt to rehome the animal themselves, but be cautious of who they allow to take ownership of their pet. Surrendering your pet to a shelter should be a last resort, as most organizations are already struggling with overcrowding.

When all other methods fail, you may contact CNHS regarding surrendering your pet. In most cases, you will be added to our surrender waitlist and will be contacted when we have kennel space available to accept your animal. All surrenders must be approved and scheduled ahead of time. CNHS does charge a surrender fee, which must be paid in full at the time of surrender. All owners surrendering an animal to CNHS must provide a valid form of identification and be willing to complete our Surrender Form. All owners who surrender an animal to CNHS will be ineligible to adopt from CNHS for at least one year.
